Scientific & Musical Sale: Preview

Part of a Private Collection of Banjos will be included in Tennants Auctioneers’ Scientific and Musical Instruments Sale on 26th May. The collection comprises ten banjos, mostly dating from the 1920s and 1930s, all in remarkably good condition for their age. Many of the banjos are highly decorated, with intricate inlaid, pierced and carved ornamentation, demonstrating the high levels of workmanship of the instrument makers.  

Highlights of the collection include an Epiphone Recording Artist Tenor Four String Banjo, with inlaid floral pattern (estimate: £700-1,000 plus buyer’s premium). A Wm L Lange Artist Professional Super Paramount Four String Banjo is offered with an estimate of £700-1,000, and a Paragon Artist Four String Banjo with an estimate of £600-800.

Also on offer in the Musical section of the sale is a Large Interchangeable Bells-En-Vue Cylinder Musical Box by Nicole Freres. Made circa 1881, the musical box is offered with an estimate of £600-800. A good selection of Vinyl LPs are also included in the sale, with records by the likes of Dire Straits, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, The Who and Roy Orbison.

Highlights of the Scientific section of the sale include a Full-Size Medical Poster depicting the human circulatory system (estimate: £300-500), and a collection of sets of drawing instruments.
