The Toys and Models, Sporting and Fishing Sale was led by a finely made Allchin Traction Engine by Michael Holden Engineering. Finished in green and measuring just 33cm long, it sold for £1,300 (all figures exclude buyer’s premium) against an estimate of £400-600.
Selling well above estimate at £900 was an Autograph Book, filled with the signatures of musical and entertainment greats such as Tom Jones, Keith Richards, Cilla Black, Ken Dodd, The Animals and Marvin Gaye. The rarest set of signatures in the book was that of The Yardbirds, the band formed in 1963 that launched the careers of three of the greatest guitarists – Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck. The latter’s signature was in the book, along with his bandmates Keith Relf, Paul Samwell-Smith and Jim McCarty. A further highlight amongst the musical collectables was a The Beatles Show Concert Ticket for Newcastle City Hall on 23rd November 1963, which was sold along with a photograph of the band for £160.
Good prices were seen for Sporting memorabilia, too, with a World Cup Final 1966 Souvenir Brochure signed by George Best and Mike Summerbee selling for £300. The vendor attended the final and sat behind Best, obtaining the prized autograph. It was sold along with a Souvenir Programme and a ticket for the final. A Collection of Pre-1960 Football Programmes sold well, too, at £480. The inclusion of rarer non-league programmes that were produced in much smaller numbers attracted a number of bidders. Strong interest was seen for the Fishing section of the sale, which was led by an impressive Wooden Fly Reservoir, which contained over 400 salmon fishing flies (sold for £300).
There was strong interest for the model locomotives in the sale, which saw very high selling rates. Notably, most popular were the high quality modern digital locomotives with electronic sounds. Also selling well was a Wrenn W2228AM2 City of Edinburgh BR46241, which sold for £420.
The sale achieved at total hammer price of £54,790 for the 443 lots, with an 89% sold rate.
