Tennants Auctioneers’ Coins & Banknotes 23rd November sale saw strong day of international bidding, with notable interest in a selection of British Administration and Republic of India banknotes, which were offered as part of the Geoff Hann Collection. The results achieved included a lot of four British Administration of India 100 Rupees issued in 1937, which sold for £2,000 (plus buyer’s premium) against an estimate of £450-550. Further notable results from this academic collection included a coin from Coele-Syria issued under Mark Anthony and Cleopatra that sold for £320, above the top estimate.

Elsewhere in the sale, an Edward III Flemish Imitation Gold Ryal performed well (sold for £1,600), a Victoria Five Pounds from 1887 (sold for £1,800) proved that coins of numismatic interest could outperform their notional bullion value, a Spanish Philip V 4 Reales from 1734 (sold for £280) attracted international attentional, and a Silver Medal from the Franco-British Exhibition held in London in 1908 sold for £950, against auction estimates of £200-250.
The sale achieved a total hammer price of £124,190 for 506 lots, and an 90% sold rate.
