Preview: Motor Cars, Motorcycles & Automobilia

30th September 2022.

A host of rare vintage and luxury cars and motorcycles are coming under the hammer in the Motor Cars, Motorcycles & Automobilia Sale at Tennants Auctioneers on 8th October, led by a 1934 Bentley Racing Tourer (estimate: £80,000-100,000 plus buyer’s premium).

This beautifully built Bentley is based on a 1930’s Derby chassis. Originally registered BLT 988 in 1935 on an Arthur Mulliner four door saloon, it was found in the mid-1990s as a derelict barn find. All that remained was the original chassis, bulkhead, axles and bonnet. This was the perfect base for a sporting 1920s special and the new owner lovingly and diligently created the perfect 1920's style replica. It is important to note that the original chassis was registered with the Bentley club as a pre war chassis. The Bentley’s pre-war identity, coupled up with an impressive 1950s 4.9 litre engine makes for a vehicle that performs as well, and if not better on the road than a 1920s four and a quarter litre.

A 1957 Land Rover Fire Engine is also up for sale (estimate: £10,000-12,000). This fire engine is a rare variant of the basic series 1 and spent most of its life at Ministry of Defence establishments and was restored in 1988.

The sale also includes a red 1960 MGA Mark 1 Roadster (estimate: £17,000-19,000, a rare Austin 1940's Junior Pathfinder Special Pedal Car (estimate: £2,500-3,500), a 1960's Austin J40 Pedal Car (estimate: £1,500-2,500), and a 1950 Dellow Mk 1 (estimate: £17,000-20,000). Dellow date back to 1949 and were used in rallies, races, and many hundreds of trials events. Around 500 Dellows were built. This very precisely restored MKll sports its original 1172cc Ford engine and has been finished to a very high standard and ready for the road or classic trial.

Amongst a good offering of motorcycles in the sale, of note are a Vincent Series C Comet 1954 500cc (estimate: £20,000-22,000) and an AJS G8 500cc ohv 1926 (estimate: £15,000-17,000).

The sale features a good selection of motoring memorabilia and car mascots, including an assortment of chromed AA badges throughout the years, a Bentley chromed car mascot, and a Rene Lalique Coq Nain glass car mascot.
