Preview: Costume, Accessories & Textiles Sale February 2021

The Costume, Accessories and Textiles Sale on 13th February at Tennants Auctioneers is set to include a varied and interesting selection of antique, vintage and modern designer clothing from the early 19th century to the present day, alongside 19th century quilts and bedcovers and luxury accessories.

Amongst a group of 19th century costume in the sale is a Regency Cream Figured Silk Wedding Jacket, with intricate frogging, piping and tassels that was worn by Mrs Sackham (née Harriet Wickens), when she married in 1815 (estimate: £120-180 plus buyer’s premium). The jacket is joined by a further Victorian Cream Silk Wedding Dress, labelled inside ‘Miss Wharton 34 Duke Street Grosvenor Square’, which is heavily ruched and offered with an estimate of £200-300.

Vintage costume from the 1920s to 1950s is in demand at auction at the moment, and amongst the highlights on offer in the sale is a group lot of 1920s and 1930s ladies costume (estimate: £200-300) comprising six dresses and two jackets. Day and evening wear from the 1960s and 70s is on offer too, with pieces from leading designers such as Jean Varon, Jean Allen, Frank Usher, Marisa Martin and Bill Gibb.

Notable textiles in the sale include a 19th century patchwork quite with a fabulous range of printed cottons (estimate: £600-800) and an early 19th century hand-embroidered bed drapes decorated with floral designs and a crest and coronet (estimate: £300-500). From the 20th century comes a pair of 1940s crewelwork panels made by sisters Mabel and Sybil Eden (estimate: £200-300); Mabel’s diaries following her aristocratic life were published in 2014 as ‘Mabel Eden’s Diary: The Life of a Lady’.  Also on offer are a selection of 1960s printed textiles, with designs from the likes of John Piper, Barbara Brown, Maija Isola and Alan Jarvis.

Modern costume and accessories include pieces by Jean Muir, Issey Miyake, Burberry, Herve Leger, Liberty, Hermes, Gucci, Prada, Mulberry, Christian Dior and Gucci. The top lot of the sale is a blue leather Hermes Clemence shoulder bag, on offer with an estimate of £700-1,000.
