Preview: Autumn Fine Sale 16th November

The Autumn Fine Sale at Tennants Auctioneers, which will take place in their Leyburn salerooms on 16th November, is set to include a fine offering of furniture, including Regency cabinets by sought-after makers, period oak and walnut furniture, and good furnishing pieces. Two of the top lots in the sale date from the 18th century, a George II Mahogany Gainsborough-Type Library Armchair dating from the mid-18th century (estimate: £3,000-4,000 all figures exclude buyers’ premium), and a George III Carved Mahogany Chippendale-Style Foldover Tea Table made circa 1760 (estimate: £4,000-6,000).

Leading the 19th century furniture in the sale are a Pair of Regency Calamander and Brass-Strung Side Cabinets, made in the early 19th century after a design by George Smith (estimate: £5,000-7,000). A Set of Six Regency Simulated Rosewood and Parcel-Gilt Armchairs, three of which are stamped ‘John Gee’ are on offer with an estimate of £2,000-3,000, a Regency Rosewood, Tulipwood-Banded and Gilt-Metal-Mounted Chiffonier, stamped ‘William Wilkinson’, who operated from Ludgate Hill, London (estimate: £1,500-2,500), and a further George IV Partridge Wood, Rosewood-Crossbanded, Boxwood and Ebony-Strung Cylinder Bureau by William Wilkinson (estimate: £1,200-1,800). Further notable lots in the sale include a good French Ormolu-Mounted and Brass-Inlaid Mahogany Envelope Card Table by Paul Sormani of Paris, made circa 1880 (estimate: £1,500-2,000), and a fine Japanese Black Lacquer and Gilt-Decorated Cabinet on Stand dating from the early 20th century (estimate: £2,500-3,500).

A good Mahogany Eight-Day Regulator Longcase Clock with Unusual Detached Type Escapement leads the clock section of the sale. Made by Rainforth & Son, Bridgewater, circa 1850, it is offered with an estimate of £2,500-3,000. Other interesting longcase clocks in the sale include a Mahogany Eight-Day Striking Longcase Clock signed Emanuel Burton of Kendal and made circa 1780 (estimate: £1,500-2,000). Amongst the table clocks is an Ebonised Quarter-Chiming Table Clock by Benj. Baddy or London, circa 1750 (estimate: £1,500-2,500), and a Rosewood Brass-Inlaid Striking Table Clock signed Wilson & Son, Southampton Street, Strand, circa 1830 (estimate: £700-1,000). Also of note are a good Rosewood Eight-Day Marine Chronometer by Muston & Gath, London and Bristol, circa 1850 (estimate: £2,500-3,000), and a Mahogany Stick Barometer, made in London circa 1800 by Dollond (estimate: £600-800).

Highlights of the Asian Art and Ceramics in the sale include a Chinese Carved Pale Celadon Jade Carving “Washing the Sacred Elephant”, which dates to the 18th or 19th century. Offered with an estimate of £4,000-6,000, it is thought the carving depicts the famous sage known as the Great Master Samantabhadra, who lived in the Ch’ien-Lung period of 1736-1795. A Royal Crown Derby Trio from the Judge Gary Service will be offered with an estimate of £2,000-3,000. Designed by Albert Gregory, the service was commissioned through Tiffany & Co., New York by Judge Elbert H Gary (1846-1927), a corporate lawyer and founder of the United States Steel Corporation. One of the most expensive and elaborate services ever made by Royal Crown Derby, the 400-piece commission was delivered in batches between 1907 and 1910, and was passed through the Gary family until it was dispersed at Sotheby’s in 1998.

A strong section of rugs includes an impressively sized Fine Bidjar Carpet, made in Iranian Kurdistan circa 1880; measuring 5.78m x 3.66m, the carpet will be offered with an estimate of £7,000-9,000. Further interesting rugs in the sale include a circa 1930 Feraghan Saroukh Carpet made in West Iran (estimate: £1,500-2,500), a circa 1880 Good Shahsavan Runner made in North West Iran (estimate: £800-1,200), and a circa 1930 Kashgai Kilim from South West Iran (estimate: £300-500).

The sale will be on public view from Sunday 10th November until Thursday 14th November, and will be displayed alongside the British, European and Sporting Art Sale, the Fine Jewellery, Watches and Silver Sale, and the single owner Selected Contents of Bell Hall, Naburn, York Sale, which will all be taking place on 15th and 16th November.
