Preview: 20th Century Design Sale March 2021

5th February 2021.

Tennants Auctioneers’ 20th Century Design offers a strong selection of lots encompassing all aspects of the discipline, with the likes of René Lalique, Clarice Cliff, Martin Brothers and Fornasetti represented. The diversity of 20th Century Design is demonstrated by the variety of materials in the sale, from traditional mahogany and silver to corrugated cardboard, aluminium and fibreglass.

Leading a group of pieces of Wedgewood Fairyland Lustre is a rare Imps on a Bridge Lincoln Plate, which is offered with an estimate of £1,000-1,500 (plus buyer’s premium), and a Black Fairyland Lustre Butterfly Woman and Floating Fairies Design Trumpet Vase, offered with an estimate of £800-1,200. Clarice Cliff features in the sale, too, with a Fantasque Bizarre Trees and House (Alpine) Lotus Jug offered with an estimate of £600-900, and a Taormina Circular Wall Plaque with an estimate of £400-600.

Further highlights of the ceramics section include a Martin Brothers Stoneware Vase, incised with bullrushes, insects and butterflies (estimate: £300-400), and a Martin Brothers Stoneware Gourd Vase by Robert Wallace Martin (estimate: £200-300). A good selection of studio pottery is on offer too, such as a Large Coil-Built Raku Vase by Huddersfield potter David Roberts (estimate: £300-500). Highlights of glass by René Lalique include an Opalescent, Frosted and Blue Stained Druide Glass Vase (estimate: £600-800) and an Opalescent and Clear Glass Poissons Dish (estimate: £250-350).

A small collection of works by the Italian Design icon Piero Fornasetti are also on offer, including a group of five Fornasetti Lacquered Aluminium Boxes (estimate: £700-1,000), two Fornasetti Lacquered Aluminium and Mahogany Cigarette Boxes (estimate: £300-500), and a Fornasetti Enamelled Tin Waste Paper Basket (estimate: £200-300) – all reputedly owned by Barnaba Fornasetti, Piero’s son.

In a furniture section that includes Design pieces from around the world, Art Nouveau furniture is particularly well represented with a group of pieces from a Private Collection. These include a three Leaded Glazed and Marquetry Inlaid Mahogany Display Cabinets (estimates: £600-800 to £700-1,000), and an Art Nouveau Mahogany Armchair, with inset hearts decorating the top rail (estimate: £300-500).
