A PRIVATE COLLECTION OF GLASFORM GLASS BY MASTER GLASSMAKER JOHN DITCHFIELD COMES TO AUCTION

24th September 2018.

An extensive Private Collection of colourful, iridescent Art Glass, by master glassmaker John Ditchfield of Glasform is coming up for auction at Tennants Auctioneers in their Antiques & Interiors Sale on 28th September.

The collection was sourced from a vendor in West Yorkshire, who amassed the impressive collection over several decades. Indeed several of the pieces are bespoke, having been commissioned for the collector’s home.  Thought to be the largest collection of Ditchfield glass to come to auction, interest has grown over the recent years in this Northern powerhouse glassworks and increasingly well-known glassmaker. Ditchfield is a well-known and respected name in the North of England – he is a modern craftsman demonstrating an age-old art.

The collection comprises almost three hundred items grouped into 113 separate lots. Estimates for single or small groupings range from £40-60 (Plus buyer’s premium) to £200-300 (plus buyer’s premium).

John Ditchfield is a master glassmaker, working from a studio in the Lancashire countryside under his trademark name ‘Glasform’. Ditchfield spent seven years learning the art of glassblowing, starting at the age of 16 when he was taken on as an assistant to Franco Toffolo at the Venetian Glass Factory in his home town of Blackpool.

After a short break, Ditchfield returned to the factory as Manager, and expanded his knowledge of glassmaking techniques, through the study of Tiffany Glass and during a trip around Europe. Opening his own studio in 1982, Ditchfield went on to produce and array of fine art glass, lighting and architectural glass. Working alongside a group of skilled craftsmen in Blackpool for over 18 years, Ditchfield then moved to his current studio at Pointer House Farm.
