Collection of Jade Carvings Sells for 12 Time Estimate in Country House Sale

29th April 2019.

A Private Collection of Chinese jade carvings and decorative object sold for a total hammer price of £30,000 in Tennants Auctioneers’ Country House Sale on 27th April. The 17-lot collection, which attracted buyers from across China, the United States and the UK, was led by a group of three carved jade disks, which sold for £7,200 (plus buyer’s premium). Further highlights included a jade carving of a fruiting peach branch, which was sold together with two similar carvings for £5,000 (plus buyer’s premium).

Encouraging results were seen all round for period furniture, with oak and country furniture selling particularly strongly, for example a George III Oak Joined Box Settle sold for £1,700 (plus buyer’s premium). Further highlights from the furniture section included a mid-18th Century serving or dining table sold for £5,200 (plus buyer’s premium), after a flurry of competing bids on the telephone and in the room, and a late 17th Century William and Mary burr walnut inlaid marquetry chest of drawers sold for £3,500 (plus buyer’s premium).

Strong results were seen for pictures, with a particularly interesting watercolour ‘The Writing on the Wall’, selling for £5,000 (plus buyer’s premium). The artist was Solomon Alexander Hart, who was the first Jewish member of the Royal Academy of Art and was the pre-eminent Jewish artist of his day. A early 19th Century portrait of Captain John Parish DL, who served in the Royal Navy in the Battle of the Nile, sold for £5,000 (plus buyer’s premium), and a watercolour of Bootham Bar in York by Louise J Rayner that had been exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1864, sold for £4,500 (plus buyer’s premium).

Country House Sales always contain unusual and intriguing items, and one such lot – a white cut paper picture of Dalkeith House, executed in 1795 by Sarah Butterworth, caught the eye of bidders to sell for £2,700 (plus buyer’s premium). The paper cut was consigned from the Estate of the Late Martin Orskey, Stow-on-the-Wold, and was amongst number of attractive lots from this interesting collection that sold strongly.

Tennants is currently accepting lots for the next Country House Sale in 14th September.
