A Private Collection of Chinese jade carvings and decorative object sold for a total hammer price of £30,000 in Tennants Auctioneers’ Country House Sale on 27th April. The 17-lot collection, which attracted buyers from across China, the United States and the UK, was led by a group of three carved jade disks, which sold for £7,200 (plus buyer’s premium). Further highlights included a jade carving of a fruiting peach branch, which was sold together with two similar carvings for £5,000 (plus buyer’s premium).

Collection of Jade Carvings Sells for 12 Time Estimate in Country House Sale
Encouraging results were seen all round for period furniture, with oak and country furniture selling particularly strongly, for example a George III Oak Joined Box Settle sold for £1,700 (plus buyer’s premium). Further highlights from the furniture section included a mid-18th Century serving or dining table sold for £5,200 (plus buyer’s premium), after a flurry of competing bids on the telephone and in the room, and a late 17th Century William and Mary burr walnut inlaid marquetry chest of drawers sold for £3,500 (plus buyer’s premium).
Strong results were seen for pictures, with a particularly interesting watercolour ‘The Writing on the Wall’, selling for £5,000 (plus buyer’s premium). The artist was Solomon Alexander Hart, who was the first Jewish member of the Royal Academy of Art and was the pre-eminent Jewish artist of his day. A early 19th Century portrait of Captain John Parish DL, who served in the Royal Navy in the Battle of the Nile, sold for £5,000 (plus buyer’s premium), and a watercolour of Bootham Bar in York by Louise J Rayner that had been exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1864, sold for £4,500 (plus buyer’s premium).
Country House Sales always contain unusual and intriguing items, and one such lot – a white cut paper picture of Dalkeith House, executed in 1795 by Sarah Butterworth, caught the eye of bidders to sell for £2,700 (plus buyer’s premium). The paper cut was consigned from the Estate of the Late Martin Orskey, Stow-on-the-Wold, and was amongst number of attractive lots from this interesting collection that sold strongly.
