Classic Cars Motor To Success

7th September 2020.

Classic and vintage cars were the stars of Tennants Auctioneers’ Motor Car, Motorcycle and Automobilia Sale on 5th September, when they came under the hammer in the North Yorkshire salerooms. After strong pre-sale interest, buyers battled it out for their top lots, bidding over the phone, online and in the saleroom. The sale was well attended given the current climate and Tennants’ 80,000 square foot premises allowed motoring enthusiasts to browse and buy in person whilst maintaining safe social distancing.

The top lot of the sale was a 1961 Jaguar MKII Saloon Concours Restoration, which beat the £45,000-50,000 estimate to sell for £71,000 (all prices quoted exclude buyer’s premium). A 1956 Jaguar XK140 sold for £50,000, and a 1965 Mercedes Pagoda 230 SL Coupe, which had generated much interest pre-sale, more than doubled the low estimate to sell for £48,000.

Interesting provenance is always sought after, and a 1967 Rolls Royce Mulliner Park Ward which was purchased new by Yorkshire and England cricketing hero Fred Trueman sold for £31,500. A 1980 Panther De Ville Saloon V12 Automatic sold well too, achieving a hammer price of £30,000, more than doubling the lower estimate. The Panther De Ville was produced by British speciality vehicle maker Panther Westwinds from 1974-1985 in a luxury ‘neo-classic’ style. This example had been tucked away in a garage for fifteen years, and only used for a couple of weddings, but will now be transported around the world to the new owner in the Far East.

A good offering of Automobilia saw competitive bidding too, with notable lots including a late Victorian Child’s Two-Wheel Cart, fitted as a hansom cab, which sold for £750, and a French 1920s vintage advertising poster after Rene Vincent for the Salmson 10 HP, which sold for £2,500. A Guggenheim Museum exhibition poster for Andy Warhol Cars in 1988 sold strongly too, at £500.

The sale resulted in a total hammer price of £426,715 for 273 lots, with an 81% sold rate.

Entries for the next sale of Motor Cars, Motorcycles and Automobilia in 2021 are now being accepted. For details contact enquiry@tennants-ltd.co.uk.
