Château d'Yquem - A Star Sauternes

Rare early Sauternes topped the Fine Wine and Whisky Sale at Tennants Auctioneers on 23^rd April when a group of nine bottles of Château d’Yquem Lur Saluces 1945 were sold for £7,200 (plus buyer’s premium). Château d’Yquem is arguably the most famous dessert wine and this desirable lot, which came from a Private Cellar, attracted much interest, and comfortably exceeded the £4,000-5,000 estimate. A further single bottle of Château d’Yquem Lur Saluces 1950 sold for £800. Wine sold confidently throughout the sale, with further good results being seen for the likes of a single bottle of Château Latour 1982 Pauillac, which sold for £1,300.

Good, old bottles of Cognac sold well too, with a bottle of Otard Dupuy & Co. Cognac 1878 selling for £550, and a bottle of La Tour d’Argent 1914 Fine Champagne Cognac selling for £620. A case of twelve bottles of Royal Oporto 1970 Vintage Port (sold for £450) and a magnum of Krug 1988 Champagne (sold for £1,100) helped the sale reach an impressive 100% sold rate – a rarity at auction.

Leading the field in the Whisky section of the sale was a Private Collection of Ardbeg, amongst which were a Cadenhead’s cask strength bottling of Ardbeg 1978 Single Malt Scotch Whisky (sold for £2,300), and a Cadenhead’s bottling of Ardbeg 15 Years Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky in its original cardboard sleeve (sold for £1,600.
