Property from a host of private collections will be coming up for sale at Tennants Auctioneers on 14th and 15th March in the Spring Sale and Asian Art Sale. Included in the sale are: The Property of Sir Brooke Boothby removed from Fonmon Castle; The Selected Contents of Eden Lacy, Lazonby, from the Estate of Victor Gubbins; Selected Items from The Court House, Bolton-by-Bowland; The Property of the Earl of Suffolk and Berkshire, Charlton Park; The Property of Sir Graham Wyllie; and A Private Collection, Victoria Lodge, Tweedsmuir, Biggar.
Notable highlights from these estates include an Italian School Set of Four Bronze Figures of Classical Maidens as The Seasons (estimate: £1,500-2,000), and a Set of Twelve Ornithological Engravings of Birds after George Edwards (1694-1773) (estimate: £500-800) from The Court House, Bolton-by-Bowland. Amongst the furniture in the sale is a Joined Oak Dresser, late 17th century with provenance from Sir Graham Wyllie (estimate: £1,500-2,000), a George I Figured Burr Walnut Cabinet on Chest (estimate: £1,000-1,500), and a Spanish Colonial Red Tortoiseshell and Walnut Bargueño dating from the late 17th Century (estimate: £1,000-1,500) from the Estate of Victor Gubbins
From other vendors in the sale come such highlights as a Pair of Delft Doré Baluster Vases and Covers, circa 1720, with provenance by repute from the Dutch Royal Household (estimate: £4,000-6,000), and an unusual Set of Seven Wedgwood Creamware Plates from the Gordan Highlanders Service, which had been commissioned in 1809 by General George Gordon, Marquis of Huntley, for the 92nd Regiment of Foot (estimate: £700-1,000). Amongst the works of art of offer are a Gold-Mounted Oliva Porthyria (Tent Olive) Shell Snuff Box from the 18th century (estimate: £800-1,200), and a Pair of Bronze Figure Groups representing Spring and Autumn, attributed to the Workshop of Guillielmus de Grof (1676-1742). Also on offer are three 17th century tapestries, including an example probably made in Beauvais depicting a crest flanked by ladies (estimate: £2,000-3,000), and a good selection of clocks including a late 17th century Small Hook and Spike Alarm Lantern Clock by Tho. Wheeler, London (estimate: £1,000-1,500), and a good Brass York Minster Form Skeleton Striking Mantel Clock by Evans of Hansworth (estimate: £1,500-2,000).
The inaugural Asian Art Sale at Tennants will take place on the preceding day, offering ceramics, work of art and furniture. One of the most interesting lots in the sale is a Chinese Porcelain Figural Night Light and Stand, modelled as a reclining cat and dating from the Chongzhen period (estimate: £3,000-5,000). A similar example, now in the British Museum, was part of a group of 23,000 pieces recovered from the wreck of an Asian ship in the South China Sea. Several items were inscribed with a date corresponding to 1643, thus dating the wreck fairly accurately, and the contents of the recovered ship were sold at Christie’s in 1984. From the same private collection comes a Pair of Chinese Porcelain Models of Recumbent Deer from the Kangxi period (estimate: £2,000-3,000).
Further highlights include a Chinese Porcelain “Red Cliff Visit” Wine Ewer and Cover from the Kangxi/Yongzheng period, the decoration referring to the visit to a famous battlefield by Song Dynasty poet Su Shi (estimate: £2,000-3,000). A Chinese Porcelain Jar (Guan) of the late Ming period is offered with an estimate of £2,000-3,000, and a Pair of Chinese Porcelain European Hunting Subject Punch Bowls from the Qianlong period are offered with an estimate of £600-800.
