Cambridge art historian, writer and broadcaster Dr James Fox explores humanity’s extraordinary relationship with colour, the subject of his latest book. Taking seven primary colours, black, red, yellow, blue, white, purple and green, Dr Fox will look at the rudimentary properties of each colour common to all societies, what meanings cultures have applied to them throughout history and how they have shaped our world. Understanding colour is fundamental to understanding art, and Dr Fox will chart milestones in the history of art through the lens of these primary colours.
Dr James Fox is a Bafta-nominated broadcaster and eminent art historian at the University of Cambridge, where he is a Fellow of Gonville and Caius College specialising in modern art, British art and the cultural history of colour. In addition to being widely published, he has written and presented many acclaimed BBC documentary series including A History of Art in Three Colours and Forest, Field & Sky: Art out of Nature.
